Many attribute this to the facts that Amundsen had made it to the pole a month sooner then they had, that they consumed a poor diet, had to haul the heavy rock samples, and simply had bad luck. |Unfortunately, Scott arrived at the South Pole only to find that Amundsen had already been there the month before, and thanks to the depression over this realization, their poor diet, the effort of dragging those rocks, and some bad luck, Scott's party never made it back, and became the first to give their lives for the sake of Antarctic science. |However, as a result of finding out Amundsen had won the race to the Pole by a full month, in accumulation with eating a poor diet, having to haul the heavy rock samples, and bad luck, Scott and his team became the first people to die on this continent in the name of science. |It is believed that between the discouragement felt when they found out that Amundsen reached the Pole a month sooner, eating a poor diet, having to haul the rocks and fossils, and utter bad luck caused Scott and his team to perish on the return trip, making them the first people to die in Antarctica for the sake of science. |Scott's team perished as they returned home, having lost the race to the South Pole to Amundsen by one month. They were possibly demoralized by simply not getting there first, but were also likely malnourished and exhausted.
